Triumphant Return

It’s been seven years since the Champions Tour has ventured north of the border but they are back and in a big way.

The Champions Tour Montreal Championship officially kicks off tournament rounds on Friday at Club de Golf Le Fountainebleau in Blainville, Quebec and golf fans couldn’t ask for better circumstances.  On top of being hosted by a quality Darrell Huxham design, the field for the inaugural Montreal Championship is nothing short of spectacular.

With the exception of Tom Watson, just about every significant Champions Tour player has made the trek to Canada.  That includes 23 of the top 30 players from the current Charles Schwab Cup points standings.  Among the recognizable names are Fred Couples, Tom Kite, Craig Stadler, Mark Calcavecchia, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, Wayne Levi and last week’s Dicks Sporting Goods Open winner, Loren Roberts.

“I’m excited to be here,” Roberts told Flagstick this morning in the on-site media tent.  “It’s a little cooler right now than I am used to but I hear it is warming up which should be good,” he mentioned as the temperatures hovered just over 12 Celsius and the wind was up.

It’s safe to say that some of the best senior-aged players are here this week and golf fans in Quebec, Outaouais, Ottawa, and Eastern Ontario have a great opportunity to see them live.

Tickets are still available and you can even sign up for a Newsletter to inform you about ticket availability for 2011 (the event is confirmed for at least a three year run) by visiting their web page here.  You can also get tickets right at the gate so a last minute trip is not out of the question.

We will be providing updates all week and have extended coverage on Sunday, live from Fontainebleau.

CLUB DE GOLF FONTAINEBLEAU
Le Fontainebleau - Huxham Golf Design Inc.

In 2010, Club de golf Le Fontainebleau welcomed the Champions Tour back to Canada after an eight-year absence as the inaugural Montreal Championship showcased some of the world’s best players in the event won by Larry Mize by one shot over John Cook. All 54,000 spectators during tournament week cheered not only the players, but the course, which presented a fair but tough challenge. That both the event and the venue were superlative was demonstrated when the Champions Tour decided to return to Fontainebleau in 2011. The second annual Montreal Championship will be contested from July 1 to 3.

It will be the latest pinnacle for Fontainebleau, which wasted no time taking centre stage in the world of golf as, one year after opening, it played host to the 2004 Telus Skins Game. Phil Mickelson bested John Daly, Vijay Singh and Hank Kuehne over the 18 holes designed by Darrell Huxham just outside Montreal. What those stars and everyone else who plays Le Fontainebleau discovered was a modern classic with large greens, wide fairways, bold bunkering and mature woodlands. The closing three holes, termed the “Hat Trick” by Golf Channel commentators during the inaugural Montreal Championship, build to a climax around a lake, within view of the neo-classic style clubhouse.

Take a Test Drive!

If you are interested in joining Club de Golf Le Fontainebleau and would like access to play in the near future, please call 1-800-787-0617 for more information
